Our History

AJ Sterling & Associates was founded in 1994 by John Johnston, a licensed private investigator who currently has over 25 years of industry experience. Prior to founding the company, John served as president of Mutual Investigations. During his time as president from 1986 to 1994, Mutual Investigations became the premier investigative agency in the northeastern United States, employing over 50 investigators and holding licenses in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

When John left Mutual in 1994 to start his own new agency, he had a vision of creating a highly personalized detective agency that specialized in matrimonial and infidelity investigations. This was a far cry from the “one size fits all” investigative approach of the large, full-service detective agencies at the time. John’s vision flourished and AJ Sterling’s reputation for quality work and professionalism grew quickly amongst private clients and the family law community. While AJ Sterling has since grown to specialize in other areas, such as corporate investigations and electronic debugging, it maintains its reputation as one of the country’s most personal and professional private detective agencies.
